Yesterday was one of those nights. The shift dragged. I accidentally killed a PDA. I was bored. I was supposed to go at midnight since I was on spare duty but at quarter to, the supervisor decided to send the rostered staff member home instead. When I did finally get to leave, I went out to my car and discovered I'd accidentally left the sidelights on and now had a completely flat battery. (The irony is that the battery stopped shortly after midnight - had I put my foot down and been a grouch and said no, I wouldn't stay on until 1am, I might have got it going.) Luckily some contractors managed to get it going but not after I'd called my breakdown company for assistance. Typically he turned up just as the car started living again. Of course, when I got back, all the car parking spaces nearest to the house were taken and I had to park about five minutes walk away.
As to what actually was wrong with work last night, it's hard to put a finger on it. Part of it was the continual "Do you want to take a break?" questions. (There's a reason why "Potential Cups of Tea" is mentioned above - had I gone for each cup offered I'd have had about 12 cups of tea yesterday.) Yesterday was a good sort of shift - on the platform so I kept mostly busy, or at least interested in what was going on around me, and not many breaks. Today was the opposite, the supervisor couldn't seem to actually think of anything much for me to do, and so I was batted between gateline and a string of breaks. There were two of us on the gateline for most of the time, too, which is never a situation I enjoy much. I did get down on the platforms for a short while but, due to a shortage of radios (and charged batteries for them, more importantly..) and the PDA freezing up, I wasn't exactly much use.
Meh. All in all, I was glad to be home and in bed.
